How to choose a blender for smoothies and everyday prep

A blender earns its place on the worktop when it suits the drinks you actually make. A morning smoothie, a milkshake for two and a batch of dry ingredients ask different things of the jar and controls. Start with those tasks before comparing a headline power figure.

Choose the jar for the job

A blending jug is intended for mixtures prepared with the liquid and ingredient quantities set out in its instructions. A separate grinding jar offers another option for approved dry ingredients. The two are not interchangeable: use the matching blade assembly and lid, and check the instructions before processing nuts, spices or other hard foods.

The SPZK HB005 countertop blender and grinder is listed with a main jug, a separate grinding jar, their lids, a motor base, a tamper and a manual. Its main jug has a nominal capacity of 64 oz, approximately 1.9 litres. That is the full stated capacity, not a recommendation to fill every recipe to the top. Follow the working marks and leave the space required by the instructions.

Look at controls, not just wattage

The HB005 lists a 1400 W motor, eight preset programmes, digital selection and variable adjustment. It also lists a six-leaf stainless-steel blade assembly and a maximum speed of up to 24,000 rpm. These figures describe this model; they do not tell you that every ingredient will reach the same texture in the same time.

Presets can simplify repeated tasks. Adjustable speed is useful when you want to approach a texture gradually. For either approach, use the ingredient order and liquid quantities in the manual. Stop and follow the instructions if a mixture does not move freely; do not reach into a fitted jug.

Measure the space above the blender

The HB005 main setup is listed at approximately 21 × 21 × 43 cm. Allow extra room above it to remove the lid and lift the jug. The separate grinding jar is approximately 10 cm wide and 16.5 cm high, so consider where it will live between uses. Measure the usable counter space rather than the cupboard's outside dimensions.

Make cleaning part of the choice

Check how the jug, lid and blade assembly are cleaned before buying. Unplug the base and wait for the blades to stop before disassembly. Keep the motor base dry, handle blade assemblies carefully and use a dishwasher only for parts explicitly approved for it. Cleaning a jar soon after use can be easier than leaving a thick mixture to dry on it.

A few checks before ordering

  • Is the selected model suitable for your usual ingredients?
  • Does its working fill limit suit the portions you make?
  • Do you need a separate grinding jar, and is it included in the selected option?
  • Is there enough space to lift the jug and remove its lid?
  • Are the electrical rating and plug correct for your destination?

Do not assume that a countertop blender can process hot soup or ice. Use either only when the exact model's instructions expressly permit it, and follow the stated temperature and quantity limits.

Blender or another drinks appliance?

A blender keeps the prepared ingredients in the mixture. A slow juicer separates juice from much of the pulp, while a plant milk maker may add heating programmes for specific recipes. Read our drinks appliance comparison if you are still choosing between these categories.
